At a work function today one of my co-workers was kind enough to buy me an Oban 14. I had never tried it before, but it is a fine, smooth whisky. I've come to find that I don't like smokiness in my whisky, and Oban is nicely flavored without any of the smoke. Of the whiskies I've tried, Oban definitely rates twoards the top, call it 3 out of 4 stars.

Oh, yum! What kind of whiskey is Oban?
ReplyDeleteI've found that I'm not a fan of smoke, either. The more I drink other whiskey, the more I appreciate my Bushmills. :)
I love the smoke, myself - Laphroaig is my Scotch whisky of choice, followed closely by Lagavulin. Though I did have a very singular limited-edition Ardbeg last Christmas, from a friend who got it at the distillery. I like Irish whiskey, too, though. Bushmills is good stuff (Black Bush is a very interesting drink), and only just up the coast from Rathlin. :-)
ReplyDeleteI went to a Scotch tasting that the Johnnie Walker people gave several years ago, and it was very interesting to taste different regional whisky samples side-by-side. It makes the distinctions much clearer.
I don't tend to drink blended Scotch, but one of the groomsmen at my daughter's wedding last weekend brought a bottle of Johnny Walker Blue, which was very good. Later in the evening, I bought my new son-in-law a Laphroaig 30 - he and I have much the same taste in Scotch. :-)
Sam: Tis a fine single malt scotch whisky ;-) I've tried various Irish, American, and Scotch whiskeys, but I consistently find the single malt scotch's to be my preference. They have a thicker consistency to them that I like. I have tried Jameson's and I want to say JB's, but I have not yet tried Bushmills. I'll give it a shot next time I'm out.
ReplyDeletejohndiii: One of my good friends likes his whisky smoky. I tried a cask strength Laphroaig 16 that he had. (I'm pretty sure it was a 16, though it might have been a 12.) It was nice and smooth but, as his fiancee commented, "it's like drinking a campfire."
ReplyDeleteI've had decent success with blends. I tried Famous Grouse which was decent, and Teacher's Highland Cream which is good except it does have a hint of smokiness. I do really like Cutty Sark and like to keep that around for "day to day" sippin'.
I haven't had any of the Johnny Walkers, partly because the different labels are a bit confusing. But I will ccertainly give the Blue a try.
And any 30 year old Scotch is a heckuva wedding gift, especially when you can share it!
